Relax...More Pleasure is the Goal
Deliberate Orgasm Article

The vagina in its natural relaxed state is an elongated, collapsed tube. In this state, the potential exists for pleasurable sensation to flow freely throughout the pelvic region and beyond. Experiencing orgasm while relaxed is not typically the way people achieve orgasm.

Pelvic muscles are constantly held tight in our day to day life to control our bodily functions. This tightening transfers over to our sex lives. We contract so as not to leak or pass gas. We also hold on to these muscles in an attempt to concentrate the sensation in the genitals.

The model of orgasm commonly used in our culture is all oriented towards a release of tension that lasts from 6 to 12 contractions. This release of tension is typically what is referred to as the orgasm.

The pelvic floor muscles are the muscles that contract rhythmically during orgasm in both males and females. It is not surprising, therefore, that a great deal of emphasis has been placed on the importance of these muscles and their role in the orgasmic response.

Kegel exercises, which work the pelvic floor muscles, are widely publicized as a way to improve orgasm for people and make intercourse feel better. The purported sexual benefits of these exercises are to give a woman what is referred to as a "tight pussy". This is said to create more contact with her partner during intercourse and stronger contractions, hence, improving orgasm.

Kegel exercises were originally developed by Dr. Arnold Kegel in 1948 as a method of controlling incontinence in women after childbirth. Studies have shown that when done properly, Kegels can improve mild to moderate incontinence by increasing bladder control through strengthening the pelvic muscles, primarily the pubococcygeus (PC) muscle.

However, if the goal is to feel more sensation during intercourse and more pleasure during orgasm, Kegel exercises actually achieve the opposite result. Less contact and less sensation.

When a woman tightens her PC muscle, two things occur in her body which limits pleasure for both partners.

First, as the muscle is tightened, the vaginal opening constricts creating a tight ring. The inside of the vagina shortens and balloons out. During intercourse, this muscular ring squeezes down making it the only point of contact with her partner’s penis. The rest of the penis literally hangs in mid-air within the ballooned vagina.

Second, tightening the pelvic muscles reduces blood circulation in the pelvic region. The decreased blood flow results in the nerve endings being deprived of oxygen. Sensation is diminished. Muscular fatigue sets in, culminating in the sudden release of tension and a short burst of feeling as blood rushes back to the tissues.

On the other hand, relaxing increases contact during intercourse and increases the potential to feel sensation throughout the pelvic region.

Staying relaxed and pushing-out, rather than squeezing and pulling-in, has the vagina remain in its naturally elongated condition providing vaginal contact along the entire length of the penis during intercourse. Relaxing allows the blood to flow freely to the genital tissues, nourishing the nerve endings with oxygen. This allows for more engorgement to occur, hence the capacity to feel sensation and pleasure is increased.

Becoming familiar with relaxing the pelvic floor muscles and noticing the sensations felt in the genitals while in a relaxed state can be done alone or with a partner by both men and women.

With pleasure as the goal, stay relaxed while being stimulated. When you have the urge to contract or pull in, gently push the pelvic floor muscles out and see what sensations you experience. Notice the blood flow and engorgement. Most importantly, have fun.
