Gustav Klimt's The Kiss, 1907-08
The image on our course page is a detail of Klimt's painting. Here's a quote about it from the
curators of the WebMuseum:
"The Kiss is a fascinating icon of the loss of self that lovers experience. Only the faces and hands
of this couple are visible; all the rest is great swirl of gold, studded with colored rectangles as
if to express visually the emotional and physical explosion of erotic love."
This image has special significance for us, not only because we have a very large,
gold-framed print of 'The Kiss' in our living room where we do the OIC's and other courses; but also because it seems to keep showing
up in our lives in other ways. In some aspects, it does indeed represent well the ideal that we strive
for in teaching men and women about the joy that is possible when the differences between the sexes are
most fully and enjoyably exploited.
