A topic in the past few years regarding childbirth has been that of women experiencing pleasurable childbirth. From the unassisted childbirth movement to the recently released documentary "Orgasmic Birth", woman are considering and seeking information quite the opposite of the commonly held belief that childbirth is painful. One example of available information is the following excerpts from Tinamarie Bernard's recent article "Orgasm and Masturbation the New Epidural for Birth?" "The science behind orgasmic birth: ...Oxytocin is released when we orgasm, when women breastfeed, and during childbirth. It’s responsible for all those feel good, highly pleasurable sensations like the ‘Big-O’, and ‘let down.’ And it helps diminish pain. The problem is that it is released in spurts, not continuously like other hormones. Things like fear, bright lights, or having strangers watching you can easily inhibit the process. Call it the shy hormone if you will, but know that it is your body’s best friend during birth if reduced pain, less tearing and increased pleasure are your ideals. Masturbation during labor? Can we trick oxytocin to stick around? The answer is yes, through masturbation. According to Jaiya in [her] video small-scale studies show that clitoral masturbation and orgasm during childbirth prevents 100% of perineal ripping... ...This doesn't mean that all women will orgasm every time they give birth, but that they can use their bodies own pain minimizing functions, structures and hormones to help ease their new baby into this world. With C-sections occurring at an alarming rate in our country, 'orgasmic birth' is a paradigm shift waiting to happen." The Welcomed Consensus on Pleasurable Childbirth: Deliberate Orgasm can and has been used in pleasurable childbirth, as well as pleasurable pregnancy and pleasurable post-pregnancy. Through manual stimulation of the clitoris by her partner, the pregnant or birthing woman can focus her attention on relaxing and feeling pleasure, while her partner who learns the technique has a reliable way to produce an orgasm in her body. As a female model of orgasm, one that can build in intensity and duration, the woman can have as much orgasm as she wants, whenever she wants. While masturbation and the spike of endorphins experienced from a climatic orgasm clearly offer benefits, the approach of Deliberate Orgasm provides solutions not yet considered.
