Agree on the enhancement of oral sex (for him) and masturbation (for me), but there is a more general purpose to shave, the fact that it feels cooler and more breezy especially in summer.
Why would you be ashamed going to your ob/gyn or any other doctor with a shaved pubic area? This thought has never crossed my mind. It probably makes their job easier, actually.
